One reason why your diet and exercise plan might not be working is because of an imbalance in hormones, more specifically perimenopause and menopause. The more complete response to why women gain weight is depicted in the diagram below. There are three types of Estrogen in women, Estrone or E1( the Estrogen of menopause), Estradiol or E2, the Estrogen of a healthy women, and Estriol or E3, which is the Estrogen of a young healthy women , and markedly improves memory and is protective against cancer. When a woman is in her 20’s and 30’s, her Estradiol and Estriol levels are often 5-7 times higher than the Estrone levels. Estradiol and Estriol are produced in the ovary, and Estrone is primarily produced in fat tissue. As a woman approaches perimenopause in approximately her mid forties, the Estrone levels and the Estradiol levels become similar, with the Estradiol lowering and the Estrone increasing. And that is because the ovaries are no longer effectively producing Estradiol and Estriol, and instead the brain is signaling the fat tissue and the ovaries to make more Estrogen. Unfortunately the ovaries are becoming tired, and not really listening, so the only place Estrogen can be made is in fat tissue, and that causes an elevation of the Estrogen, Estrone or E1. Well now when menopause starts to rear its ugly head, the Estradiol and Estriol levels are plummeting and the Estrone levels are continuing to increase. Your brain is screaming to make more Estrogen, reflected by spiraling FSH levels, hot flashes, and night sweats. The only feasible way for your body to increase the Estrone levels, is if there is more fat. And that is why the body now becomes dedicated to making more fat, so that it will then be able to make more Estrogen.

I take care of a large number of women who while going through menopause have or are experiencing unpleasant weight gain. Often this weight gain is tied with a commitment towards exercise and careful eating. So why do women struggling with menopause and/or hot flashes and night sweats, experiencing weight gain? The bottom line is that you aren't responsible! It is your body that is dedicating itself to gaining weight and building its fat stores. So why is that?

One reason why your diet and exercise plan might not be working is because of an imbalance in hormones, more specifically perimenopause and menopause. So why do women in menopause gain on the average 20-30 pounds? The simple response is that your body needs estrogen. And when a woman enters menopause, her estrogens plummet to levels lower than when she was nine years old. Her body is now dedicated to make more estrogen, and the primary estrogen of menopause is Estrone. Estrone is made primarily in fat tissue. So the only way to make more Estrone, is to make more fat. It’s very simple. Your body becomes absolutely dedicated to making more estrogen, and therefore dedicated to making more fat. It doesn’t care if you eat properly or exercise. It just demands more estrogen, and the signal to tell the body to make more fat is the same signal that results in hot flashes and night sweats. Balancing your hormones during menopause with Bio-identical hormones has been shown to cause a 15 pound weight loss in one year. So if you are having hot flashes, balancing your hormones will get rid of the night sweats and hot flashes, nurture your sleep, improve your memory and lose weight.
